چکیده

The West Antarctic Ice Sheet (WAIS) is the only remaining marine ice sheet from the last glacial period. The bed is primarily below sea level and slopes down from the coast to the interior. It has been hypothesized that the ice sheet may be susceptible to run-away grounding line retreat [Weertman, 1974] leading to rapid disintegration and sea level rise. Were the WAIS to completely melt, the water released is sufficient to raise global sea level by 5–6 meters. The likelihood of such a scenario, and the ice sheet’s sensitivity to climate forcing are topics of ongoing research. It is clear, however, that climate and ice dynamics interact in complex ways, with influence from the geologic boundary conditions and atmosphere and oceanic circulation patterns. The grounding line position and net balance are key parameters for observing ice sheet changes. Those data, when combined with accurate basal environment information, are critical for supporting model-driven hypothesis concerning the response of the WAIS to climate-change and sea-level change [Hughes, 1975; Mercer, 1978]. Ice discharges from the West Antarctic Ice Sheet to the sea largely by three major drainage systems: the ice streams of the Siple Coast (ice streams A-E) that flow into the Ross Ice Shelf, the ice streams that flow into the Filchner-Ronne Ice Shelf (Rutford Ice Stream, Carlson Ice Stream, Foundation Ice Stream), and the large ice streams that flow directly into the Amundsen Sea (Pine Island Glacier, Thwaites Glacier; Figure 1 is a Radarsat image of the region). The ice streams

Constraining the recent mass balance of Pine Island and Thwaites glaciers, West Antarctica, with airborne observations of snow accumulation

In Antarctica, uncertainties in mass input and output translate directly into uncertainty in glacier mass balance and thus in sea level impact. While remotely sensed observations of ice velocity and thickness over the major outlet glaciers have improved our understanding of ice loss to the ocean, snow accumulation over the vast Antarctic interior remains largely unmeasured. Here, we show that a...

New boundary conditions for the West Antarctic Ice Sheet: Subglacial topography of the Thwaites and Smith glacier catchments

[1] Airborne radar sounding over the Thwaites Glacier (TG) catchment and its surroundings provides the first comprehensive view of subglacial topography in this dynamic part of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet (WAIS) and reveals that TG is underlain by a single, broad basin fed by a dendritic pattern of valleys, while Smith Glacier lies within an extremely deep, narrow trench. Subglacial topography...

Divergent flow of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet on the outer continental shelf of the Amundsen Sea during the late Quaternary

Divergent flow of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet on the outer continental shelf of the Amundsen Sea during the late Quaternary" (2007). Related Publications from ANDRILL Affiliates. Paper 7. Summary Understanding the past glacial history of regions undergoing potential rapid deglaciation is essential in order to estimate the possible threat of sea level rise. Recently acquired data have given new...

Changes in ice dynamics and mass balance of the Antarctic ice sheet.

The concept that the Antarctic ice sheet changes with eternal slowness has been challenged by recent observations from satellites. Pronounced regional warming in the Antarctic Peninsula triggered ice shelf collapse, which led to a 10-fold increase in glacier flow and rapid ice sheet retreat. This chain of events illustrated the vulnerability of ice shelves to climate warming and their buffering...

Antarctic outlet glacier mass change resolved at basin scale from satellite gravity gradiometry

The orbit and instrumental measurement of the Gravity Field and Steady State Ocean Circulation Explorer (GOCE) satellite mission offer the highest ever resolution capabilities for mapping Earth’s gravity field from space. However, past analysis predicted that GOCE would not detect changes in ice sheet mass. Here we demonstrate that GOCE gravity gradiometry observations can be combined with Grav...
